St. Petersburg, FL June 16, 2006 - Barb Elgin, President and Founder of CoachSappho.com (a subsidiary of BE A Success Enterprises, LLC), has decided to give back to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community by donating all proceeds from her St. Petersburg Gay Pride Festival raffle to the Juno Foundation.
Elgin commented on her philanthropic effort by stating, "I selected the Juno Foundation nonprofit for St. Pete Pride because it is Florida-based, was founded and is run by lesbians, and has as it's sole mission helping lesbian women with cancer. Lesbian women's health research is terribly under funded and lesbians as a group face serious issues when looking for and receiving adequate health care in our society. It's really a travesty. Many lesbian women put off going for checkups because they dread having to answer the doctor's questions about marital status and even birth control."
"And, many doctors still assume that all of their patients are exclusively heterosexual. I'll bet most U.S. physicians, hospitals and medical practices still need to create a more inclusive and understanding office experience for lesbian and bisexual women by doing simple things such as adding 'domestic partnered' to the ubiquitous marital status question on the patient intake form, putting gay or lesbian 'safe' symbols on office bulletin boards, having lesbian health literature openly available and making it safe and validating for women to talk about their true sexual practices with physicians, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants. Regardless of a physician or healthcare professional's personal beliefs, I think our laws need to be enhanced to ensure that sexual minority women receive safe, adequate care that is equal to the care heterosexual women enjoy."
Genie Wood, President of the Juno Foundation, responded to Elgin's generosity by stating, "The Juno Foundation is honored to be the recipient of Barb Elgin's (Coach Sappho's) raffle proceeds at this years St. Pete Pride Festival. Barb's active support of Florida's lesbian community is an inspiration to others and should be commended. One hundred percent of donations resulting from the raffle will go directly to those that need it most, gay women battling cancer."
The raffle and drawing will be held at St. Petersburg's June 24, 2006 Gay Pride Festival. Tickets may be purchased for one dollar each at Coach Sappho's pride booth. Prizes include accommodations at Swiftwaters Campgrounds, numerous gift certificates from gay-friendly businesses such as Flowers TLC, Esteem MedSpa, Peacock'sT Pet Shop, Pet Portraits, Drawings by Eunice Fisher, Flamingo Restaurant and Suncoast Resort Hotel, MC Film, GEO Sweeney Hair Salon at Hyde Park, Coach Paula Gregorowicz and Nutrition Consultant Pam Murphy.
